Each microarray contains 14976 duplicate spots (total spot number: 29952) in 48 grids of 26 rows and 24 columns. The 48 grids were arrayed in a 4x12 pattern of 4 metacolumns and 12 metarows.

Oligonucleotides directed against the S. meliloti 1021 coding regions and the alien oligonucleotide controls were taken from the Sinorhizobium meliloti Array Ready Oligo Set Version 1.0 (Operon).

Oligonucleotides directed agains intergenic regions were designed using the OligoDesigner (Daniel Paarmann, BRF, CeBiTec, Bielefeld University).
