Research

The aims of the research at SYNMIKRO are a better understanding of the biochemical, cellular and ecological functions of microorganisms and the construction of synthetic microbial units.

Bioethics

The Bioethics group deals with the ethical problems and the technical and social risks of synthetic biology. Goal is to develop criteria for the ethical evaluation of synthetic biology /microbiology.

The ethical reflection is based on a consequentialist approach, which focus on balancing desirable and undesirable consequences of action and considers a realistic description of the actual state of research in the field of synthetic biology/microbiology and its applications. For this purpose a model for the ethical assessment of synthetic biology/microbiology (“Stufenmodell zur ethischen Bewertung der Synthetischen Biologie/Mikrobiologie”) is developed in close collaboration with all research areas of SYNMIKRO.
